I once stopped a guy to ask directions in Brookline. He was short and professorial and confirmed that I was indeed on the right track to my orchestra rehearsal. There was something self-amused about his smile that made me think. It took me about 5 minutes to realize that it was Michael Dukakis, only about four years after his failed run for president, just tottering home on a spring evening from teaching at Northeastern.
I think he thought I stopped him just to get a chance to speak to him. He was wrong, I had no idea where I was and was worried I was going to be late.

I ran into JoAnne Carner. Literally – I was volunteering at an LPGA event (nothing better to do that summer), walking along, head down and wham. A few steps later I thought ‘hey, I’ve seen her on TV’ ..

Met Boris Yeltsin, once. Went as a high school group to hear him speak just a year and a half before things finally came apart in Russia. Got to shake his hand. The man smelled like a distillery.

A friend of mine recognized the members of Ozric Tentacles at Logan Airport and got them to pose for a photo. They were as surprised as he was.
