Harvard plans to sharply reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in the next eight years, Drew Faust, the university president, said.
The initial, short-term goal for the university will be to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent from a 2006 baseline by 2016, Faust said yesterday in a statement.
Unless Harvard is going to fire up a reactor, this is purest nonsense.
It’ll be interesting to see what sorts of smoke and mirrors are deployed over the next few years to allow them to claim success.

Mirrors already deployed, here. Modest (5%?) smoke reductions are included, but the rest is just paper, mostly offsets and green electricity.

According Mencius Moldbug, elite universities are the true rulers of the United States. If that’s so, Harvard could probably get away with nuclear investments.

One of our local semi-elites, U of C, had its own reactor, a mere 65 years ago. Half a century later, Princeton had its very own break-even tokamak.
If we’re going to choose up sides for physics breakthroughs, I’ll take the elite universities (including URA and the national labs), please, and you can have the United States.

Too late Harvard’s reactor(Manhattan project relic used for proton cancer treatment) was dismantled about five years ago.

Not to worry; the Little Red Brick School Down the Road shutting down their reactor doesn’t mean that Cambridge isn’t still a nuclear power.
