I took something different from The Time Traveller than most folks – I really liked the Morlocks, and detested the Eloi.

If you’re going to frolic in the gardens all day, and not accomplish crap, then my sympathies are with the engineers and the steam fitters – they’re accomplishing something.

    I used to think that “tax cuts for the wealthy” weren’t fair. But now I realize that by definition, all tax cuts are for the wealthy since the wealthy PAY MOST OF THE TAXES!

    I guess my question with this graph is simply that while the bottom 50% pay 3.1% of the total collected, what is the percentage of their individual income versus those at the other end of the scale? i.e. Could a person in the bottom bracket have 10% taken out of their 20K per year, leaving them 18K to live on, while those in top 1% have 5% of their 20M, leaving them with a paltry 19M to live on? While less total dollars may be taken out of the lower earners pockets, the effect on each group is radically different.

    Sabo, How can you judge the effect? Maybe losing $2K seems like a good and fair deal to the poorer guy, and he doesn’t complain too much for all the benefits his government hands him. Meanwhile, the productive guy wonders why Mr. 20K gets to bite from a million of his hard-earned dollars for no effort and no risk, and decides not to expand the business.

    Is that what you meant by the effect being different?

    Is the purpose of tax code supposed to be behaviour modification?

    Bah.

    You want a service or a product, you negotiate and pay the cost. Big Macs, BMWs, Blackwater – whatever. This whole ‘give up 10% of income’ business should be the provenance of the Church, not the State, as in ‘please donate 10% because it’s the right thing to do’, not ‘give us 10% or we jail/impoverish/shoot you’.
