horrible website usability … from your friend, the government!
To to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
There are something like 40 links off the page.
Which one do I want, to renew my registration?
I read over 20 or so of them before I get to “renew your registration”.
I can imagine that there is a better way to organize this – how about doing a bit of datamining, finding the top 4 links that get clicked, and calling those out up top?
(And, does “BLOG ARCHIVE” need to be in capital letters? Also, do many folks find the need to go and read the archives of the blog of the Registry of Motor Vehicles!?!?!?)
Having clicked the link “Renew your registration” do I find myself at a page titled “Renew your registration”, perhaps with a breadcrumb back to the main page?
I do not. I find myself at a page titled Welcome to the RMV Express Lane.
There are 11 paragraphs of text (one of them tells me that I need 128 bit SSL encryption … do we really need this text in the year 2008 ?).
At the bottom the call to action is … what?
There’s no H1 text saying “Now do this…”.
There’s no big orange button saying “click to begin”.
What is there?
Text that says
Please review our privacy policy before continuing with your transaction.
…and, as it turns out, that’s not even the proper way to proceed.
GAHH!
Rope!
