MADISON, Wis. – The war in Iraq is creating a major – and perhaps deadly – shortage of night vision goggles for civilian pilots who fly medical helicopters in the United States.

Oh noz!

How will the market ever respond to demand !?!?!?!?!

Sizemore estimated that only 25 percent of the 800 or so emergency medical helicopters in the United States have the technology.

…errr…so night-vision goggles are so important that … wait for it … 75% of the folks in charge of equipping of civilian medical choppers didn’t ever get around to purchasing them.

…but now this is a health disaster that we can lay at the feet of Bush and the neocons?

Right.

Got it.

Didn’t you get the memo? Markets are evil, everything is Bush’s fault.

Um I can order a pair today and have them in my hands tommorrow. there is no shortage. Furthurmore, they require extensive training for safe use flying. You can’t just wear them and expect to do well.

I would expect FLIR to be more useful in a chopper.

I was going to say what JJ did – you can’t just strap them on and go flying. Hell – walking around with them at night took some getting used to.

Operating machinery while goggled would be .. interesting.

I have a solution – flares. If the crew needs to land somewhere without lights, fly around the LZ and drop flares. Once the ground is lit, land.
