interesting

Hugely convincing data that candidate Huckabee didn’t lose 100+ lbs by dieting, as he says, but by surgery.

As an extropian, I have no objection to people undergoing stomach banding or other surgical weight loss procedures if they think that the benefits exceed the costs, but if someone opts to go the surgical route, I suggest that moralistic lecturing based on the presupposition that they accomplished something entirely on willpower is inappropriate.

    Suspicious.
But I am always impressed by how much weight people can lose by changing simple things.
Like the guy who lost 100-150 lbs because he stoped eating a pint of ice cream whenever he felt like it.
But I’d say that bad eating habits like that which don’t have strong emotional roots that have been in place for 100 extra pounds or so usually don’t go away by themselves.
It’s like the 3 pack a day smoker, who up and quits after 20 years because someone finally told them it was the reason that they couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs anymore. These people exist, but they aren’t common.
