what should I do with my life ?

1. Go to http://www.careercruising.com/.
2. Put in Username: nycareers, Password: landmark.
3. Take their ?Career Matchmaker? questions.
4. Post the top ten results.
Mine:
- Aerospace Engineer
- Mechanical Engineer
- Computer Engineer
- Electrical Engineer
- Mining Engineer
- Industrial Engineer
- Venture Capitalist
- Purchaser
- Model Maker
- Astronomer
There are only three surprises here:
“Purchaser” ?!?!? WT* ?
Mining engineer? A bit odd…but…Absolutely. I’ve thought of that. As long as it takes place on another planet.
Model Maker: Yeah, I can see that. I wouldn’t want to do it as a career, but I’ve often thought that after I retire, I’d like to make hugely intricate miniature machines, robots, burr puzzles, etc.
I find it interesting that my top career is Aerospace engineer. That’s what I wanted to be, before college, but I convinced myself that the first golden age of aerospace engineering was gone, and the next wave was too far off. I still think that that was a reasonable conclusion, and a reasonable choice. But…yeah, I’d give up my left crown jewel (or my right one) for the chance to work on aerospikes, or ion thrusters, or SSTO vehicles…

What the effing eff. I refuse to post my #1 and 2 result as they were so ridiculous that you would never stop making fun of me, and rightly so.
3. Commercial Diver
4. Naturopath
5. Physician Assistant
6. Psychiatrist
7. Ironworker
8. Recreation Therapist
9. Licensed Practical Nurse
10. Chiropractor
#9 is what I actually am. I would consider #7 but none of the others. This test can eat it.

My dad’s dad was an ironworker.
Come on, tell us #1 and 2. I give you my word that I won’t give you any static.
Or – more realistically – that I won’t give you much static….

Interestingly enough, I have experience in about half the top ten, but none of it professional – I liked cars and building things. Meanwhile, what I actually do, comes in at #33, and I tried for a bit to branch off into #32
32.Tool and Die Maker
33.Machinist

3.Paleontologist
4.Veterinarian
5.Taxidermist
6.Historian
7.Pet Groomer
8.Security Systems Technician
9.Marine Biologist
10. Sign Maker
Mmmm… quizzy.
I want to know why Marine Biologist is #9 and plain ol’ Biologist is just #29. That’s weird.
Apparently, according to these gurus, I’d like being a librarian, too, which is good cause that’s what I’m going for. But it’s not in my top 10, or even in my top 30. Whereas Sign Maker and Security Systems Technician are. Silliness. Who ever heard of being a Sign Maker?
To be honest, I’d probably be down with any of these career choices, if the work environment were right and if I were living in a sympatico place. I’m a generalist. What can I say? Damn hippies.

With that not working out, I’m settling for a variant of #5.
