packaging

Joel agrees with me that the new MSFT software packaging is teh ass.

Seriously, it took me five minutes to figure out how to get MS Project out of it’s box.

I guess they listened to the advice that says the packaging should echo the nature of the product inside.

Maybe that was a hint that it should have been left in the box? Doesn’t Joel also have a rant on the idiocity of Gantt charts?

To be fair, Gantt charts are generally poor CYA tools for software projects. Project was originally built for construction projects, and it does apply reasonably well there.

I find Gantt charts useful for coordinating three engineers, and three outside contractors. They help me figure out (a) when we need to redistribute work; (b) when we need to increase pressure on people; (c) what order tasks should occur in.

    YMMV.

I was at the office at the time, and I thought quite seriously about throwing it against a brick wall…
