wherein TJIC disses on the Globe and abortion

http://www.boston.com/news/local/article…

In response to the Supreme Court decision upholding the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, many abortion providers …

To avoid any chance of partially delivering a live fetus, … are injecting fetuses with lethal drugs before procedures.

Huh.

I wonder if there are any other ways to avoid the chance of partially delivering a live baby before killing it by sticking scissors in its skull?

Massachusetts bans virtually all abortions at and beyond the 24th week

“Virtually all”? Does that mean the same thing as “all” ?

…except to protect the life or health of the mother.

Maybe I’m misremembering, but I recall reading interviews over the years with several different abortionists who said that having a child you don’t want is a mental stress and thus a health issue, and thus a way to perform abortions when the law says “abortions only for health issues”.

So…the law, as practiced by abortionists, is that the only way a woman can get an abortion at 8.9 months is…if she doesn’t want the child?

What does the Massachusetts law say about this?

http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/112-1…

I. TITLE XVI. CHAPTER 112. Section 12M…

If a pregnancy has existed for twenty-four weeks or more, no abortion may be performed except … if a continuation of her pregnancy will impose on her a substantial risk of grave impairment of her … mental health.

So, for example, in Massachusetts if there is a substantial risk (say…5% to 25%) that a woman will suffer clinical depression by delivering a child, then it’s legal to abort a child at 8 months and 29 days.

But, anyway, the Boston Globe was trying to tell me that this is a concern I should put entirely out of my head, because the law makes sure that the right thing will always happen, so I shouldn’t be rude and interrupt.

Back to the Globe article:

They decided that whether to have an injection should be up to the patient; some are comforted by the idea that the fetus has died before it is removed.

“Removed” ? Huh. Usually the word is “delivered”, no ?

That concern is so great in his clinic, he said, that the ban is having an impact on medical education: Medical students and nursing students are no longer invited to watch later-term abortions, for fear one might misinterpret the procedure and lodge a criminal complaint.

He’s worried that someone might see some entirely innocuous procedure and “misinterpret” it as a live baby being delivered, then killed by sticking scissors in its skull.

So worried that he doesn’t allow witnesses, because of the high chance of someone misinterpreting something that way, huh?

Fascinating.

    Whole lotta euphemism goin’ on.

Nice distillation of the debate over this particular procedure.

And I would’ve thought that you – the self proclaimed anarchist/ libertarian – would’ve been pro-choice. Not pro-abortion – the two are not the same – but against more government interference in the private lives of people.

    huh.

I’m against aggression, whether against adults, kids, unborn kids, or dogs involuntarily made to fight.

I am not a fan of government, but I want thieves, muggers, rapists, and killers punished, so as to deter these crimes.

We can discuss what methods should be used in anarchotopia to prevent agression, but in the absence of anarchotopia, I support the government acting to ban and punish these acts.

If pregnant women have the official power of life and death over their fetuses, that makes them governments.

The ultimate welfare state for the citizen:

Everything is comfy, warm, and fully paid for. …except, because you are property, you can be killed at any time.

And, crucially for the moral justice of the setup, you are free to leave at any time, with no obligation to repay the state’s investment in bringing you into existence.
