This post makes me think of Ezra Pounds economic arguments (at least the non-anti-semitic ones) He believed that Confucianism was a powerful economic and cultural stimulator, and I can’t help noticing that the data-points in the Confucian bin are all big economic performers.

Ez, why did you have to be a fascist? Everything else about you was so cool.

    Sigh. :(

  2. Russell Says:

Confucianism is not “traditional”? That’s dumb. It’s one of the most impressive forms of tradition the world has produced. Apparently when he says “tradition” he means simply “religious” or something.

    James,

An interesting question is whether the people of those countries produced Confucianism or whether Confucianism produced them. I tend towards the former myself, these days.

“East Germany”? Exactly how old is this map? ;-)

  4. Hannes Engelbrecht Says:

Lumping South Afica at the same spot as Pakistan and Iran in terms of Traditional Values vs Self-Expression dates this map to *at least* the pre-1990′s.

The current socio-political layout puts South Afica at around the Belgium position

I didn’t realize they put Israel in the middle of Catholic Europe.
