etymology
While reading a Scarlet Traces comic book, I was unhappy to run into a use of the word “flak”. The German word for antiaircraft fire (“Fliegerabwehrkanone”) only got shortened to “flak” and added to English around WWII … and thus is out of place in an alternate history Victorian steampunk-on-Mars-in-1910 comic book.
Don’t get me started on uses of the word “mesmerized” in high fantasy.
