I do not know where we continue to find these outstanding individuals who are willing to sacrifice everything for an uncaring populace. I wish we deserved them.

Well, I am not really intruiged by his mish-mash of rich-bashing, anti-capitalism, pro-tribalism and socialism that makes up a modern military (don’t forget medieval military was even worse, though less egalitarian).
What I liked about military service was to find your limits and to expand them. This is what can be said about a boot camp, it fine-tunes your character. However, what I never liked were the young people hoping to get some “action”, because they obviously never visited a war-torn country.
I still accept the military as a necessary evil, but nothing to be glorified (I thought that was the lesson behind the War of Independence, where a rag-tag band of patriots beat a traditional and very proud military with a disciplined training that has ages of embedded expertise).
