Franklin Park Zoo may close, euthanize animals

Zoo officials said the possible closing of the institution, which has drawn generations of families, is due to budget cuts imposed by Governor Patrick

I’m sorry, but National Lampoon already did this exact same appeal for money, and they did it better:

I guarantee you that if the state government’s contribution to the zoo budget actually stays at $2.5 mill, no animals will be euthanized. This is just a cheap ploy, like saying that a $50k / year budget shortfall will necessarilly result in the closing of libraries and the public crucifixion of Big Bird, instead of cutting police overtime.

It seems that all of the commenters at the Globe have fallen for the bait, though – they’re all equating giving the zoo just $2.5 mill in taxpayer dollars instead of the asked-for $6.5 mill is the equivalent of personally killing the animals.

Wow, a personal guarantee from an anonymous blogger. I think I’ll take that to the bank.

I guess you didn’t click the “About TJIC” link.

It’s “hiding” … at the top of the page, first link.

As if “Joe Blowe” is anything but a nom de plume, either.

Just another variant on the Washington Monument Defense, except this time with fur and tender feelings.

So, just thinking out loud here, wouldn’t the best solution if this was really that bad be to sell a couple of the animals, rather than killing the lot? I’m sure Escobar wouldn’t be the only rich guy who’d like a Hippo as a status symbol: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/07/10/2621897.htm
